With hard plastic on the outside & soft foam on the inside at all critical & injury prone areas like the shoulders, ribs, elbow & spine, it will help to absorb most of the impact should you fall or hit something. A hard impact on the spine from a fall would probably result in permanent paralysis. It was originally designed for Moto Cross (MX) use but now it has been adapted to DH cycling due to the serious injuries caused by mishaps.
